When Shantiva contacted me again a few weeks ago, I was trilled.
This time the request was to try out the Tibetan singing bowl.
Because I have no experience with these bowls I did some research.
This is what I learned about the tibetan singing bowl
Tibetan singing bowls have been around for centuries, as far back as 2500 years. Their purpose is their use for medication and healing by stimulating our brain through sound and vibration.

What is a tibetan singing bowl?
A singing or Tibetan singing bowl, is a bowl which produces sound and vibration when you strike it with a mallet. There are metal and crystal bowls, which became popular at the end of the 20th century. The metal bowls have a long history and were used by Buddhist monks for thousands of years in mediation practices.
The bowl I received from Shantiva, is like the one pictures above.
Today, singing bowls are associated with healing, meditation, sound therapy, yoga and other mental and health practices.
Sound
As per Shantiva:
For human beings, sound is a vehicle which can help us arrive to a healthier state of being, both physically and mentally. It also allows us to explore and express the feelings we keep inside of us. For this reason, singing bowls are becoming increasingly popular to treat anxiety disorders, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder. The vibrations work throughout our bodies massaging, cleansing, and purifying, while the calm meditative state allows individuals to search within and find what ails them.
Singing bowls can be used to help alleviate symptoms of illness. Thus they are becoming more and more popular with cancer patients. Not to heal the body of cancer, but to help provide relief of the symptoms.

How do they work?
Singing bowls “sing” by creating vibrations. The vibrations are created through friction when a mallet makes contact with the bowl. These vibrations are heard through beautiful sounds that are felt within our bodies and energy fields.
Singing bowls and their notes have the power to influence our brainwave pattern. This causes a feeling of deep relaxation and focus.
As the vibrations move through our body it helps to restore balance and peace. Crystal singing bowls are often used in Chakra healing by opening the Chakra and restoring balance.

How Do You Play Singing Bowls?
There are two distinct ways to play your singing bowl.
First is by striking the mallet against the bowl, this produces vibrations and a beautiful sounds. Holding the bowl in your hand will enhance the experience. It allows for the vibrations to travel through your body.
The second method is by “rimming” the mallet across the rim of the bowl. Resonance is the sound we hear when there is no more contact made. The short video will explain it much more beautifully.
How have I been playing my bowl?
I mostly end up with lightly striking the bowl, playing it at different places on the bowl, produces different sounds. It is very pleasing and relaxing this way.
The “rimming” method is more challenging, and thus far my results have been very mediocre. I guess my biggest thing is being impatient and wanting instant results. My bowl is teaching me to focus and be consistent. By just rimming my finger across the bowl it produces also a pleasant sound.
Faraday waves
Adding water to the bowl changes lowers the resonance. The energy of the vibration charges the water. This created waves and even droplets that skip the surface. This phenomenon is known as Faraday waves .
Handcrafted quality
Shanti handmade singing bowls are unparalleled in beauty and quality. Each bowl is carefully hand-crafted by skilled Tibetan artisans using traditional techniques. In accordance with an ancient Tibetan formula, our singing bowls are made of “panchaloga”, which is a Sanskrit word meaning a five-metal alloy that includes copper, zinc, iron, and traces of gold and silver. Our bowls create an incredible sound with rich, warm and vibrant overtones. Each bowl also comes with a gorgeous hand-carved wooden mallet. The result is a beautiful piece of functional art with incredible healing properties.

A word of caution
For some illnesses and medical conditions, caution should be observed when playing the singing bowls.
For example those with epilepsy, certain heart conditions and implanted metal such as plates and screws should consult the family physician first. The same is true for some medications.
Shanti bowl explains this all very clear on their blog.
